Hornby Primary School

This project involved the construction of a new Sports Hall and Administration Block, Relocation and establishment of 5 existing classrooms from the High School to the Primary School site and large landscaping portion to form a new school entrance.

The new Sports Hall was a 550m2 purpose-built facility with a structural steel frame on concrete floor slabs over foundation beams. Exterior cladding was powder-coated aluminium vertical boards and profiled metal over PIR panels. The new school’s office and administration facilities were also encompassed in the building. The interior fitout consisted of strandboard linings to the Sports Hall, painted gib and autex wall covering to the Administration areas, a significant amount of interior joinery and built-in seating and storage.

A major challenge was operating within the middle of a functioning school site. This creates significant health and safety risks that were constantly monitored. The large relocation had to be completed within Christmas School Holidays which was a tight timeframe. We completed it and obtained a Certificate for Public Use (CPU) from City Council prior to the start of the school year to allow buildings to be occupied.

Successes included completing this project on time and to a high standard. We received excellent feedback from consultants with our performance noted in the minutes and minimal defects identified post-occupation. There was excellent cooperation by the project delivery team including the contractor, architect, project manager and the MOE.

“Safety was paramount during the construction and our pupils’ and staff needs were not compromised at any time. The workers were respectful of the school values at all times, and the school had no issues during the entire construction. The staff, children and families love our new building and we are still receiving positive comments about the space. Thanks to Hann Construction, we have a very positive outcome that the entire Hornby community is proud of.”
